Our Story
My vision for The SELF Centre began when one of my four young children faced a life-threatening mental health crisis at just 7 years old. Every member of our family felt the impact and carried their own version of trauma. As I searched for support, I found myself let down and underwhelmed by the resources available. I saw gaps, missed opportunities, and a system that often left the hero feeling alone, and not like a hero at all.
I sat in countless waiting rooms over the next few years of my child’s recovery and wished there was more for me as the caregiver than to just sit in a chair and wait during the appointments. Perhaps I could move some of the tension that felt stuck in my body. Perhaps there was someone I could talk to about caregiver burnout. Perhaps there was a place I could lay down and decompress my back. Maybe I could listen to some calming music or learn about using my breath to calm my nervous system. I began imagining The SELF Centre.
The conversations I had about this with my own mom—who supported me on every step of this long journey and shared the same resolve—turned into a someday dream, which has now turned into a manifested reality.
The Self Centre, PLLC was founded in 2025. We now combine our unique expertise and 50 years of professional experience to provide the standard of support families deserve.
In 2020, as COVID surged, I struggled to find solid footing. It was difficult to provide effective mental or emotional relief for to my COVID ICU staff as they worked so hard to care for those that needed care the most. It shifted my focus from healthcare to mental health care. Then my grandchild had a mental health crisis that would impact me so deeply that mental health became my soul focus.
Lived experience provides insight and understanding of the most difficult parts inside a mental health crisis. It highlights the needs, the gaps in available resources and the never-ending search of where and how to find help. That darkest hour is when my vision for The SELF Centre was born. I chose to change the course of my 33-year career in healthcare so that I could help bridge the gap for my family and other families facing similar situations.
The SELF Centre was built to serve individuals and their families to navigate what can feel like an insurmountable mountain. Our experience gave my daughter and I the unique opportunity to blend our expertise in caring for both the mind and body. Though we provide independent psychiatric care and Physical therapy services, we do so in a therapeutic space that focuses on the connection between the mind, body, and soul. Stress will show up in the body, we help you recognize how it shows up and what you can do about it.
